Default Visio Stencil File Location

Where are these located? Is it an invisible file? Also, do you need for each computer to have a local copy or is there any way to make these available to all? Thank you!

Well, I did find the location for the files and was able to copy them from one PC to the other. But, if anyone knows how to share these rather than contiually copying and pasting between PCs that would be great!

Hi Alex,

You can place Visio stencil on a shared network location. You just have to tweak a setting to get the network location included in Visio's "known locations for shapes".

To add the stencil path to Visio's locations:

1. Go to: Tools > Options > Advanced (tab)
2. Click the File Paths... button.
3. Add your network path to the Stencils text box.

Details I'm not sure about:

- If the network location have to be mapped: ie: "X:\..." or can you use the "\\..." notation.
- If this mess up D-tools SI in some way, since it runs on top of Visio, and we are "kind of" messing with two interdependent systems.

SI 5 Visio stencils are located here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\D-Tools\SI5\Visualizations\Stencils

Yes, the Application Data folder is a hidden folder. To show the folder, open up My Computer and select Tools->Folder Options. Click the View tab and check the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button. While here, you may also want to uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

All stencils located here will display in the Stencil Tree within Visio.

Currently, manually copying these files is the only way to share any custom or modified stencils withing SI 5.

Awesome Stuff,

do have a question though; yes this drops your new Visio stencil into the stencil tree inside visio. I was importing a furman file and when I opened viso and went to the stencil tree there it was only under the folder “custom” is there a way to move it so it list under the folder “manufactures” ??
I just like to keep everything located in a general location so it is easy to find when you need to.
Thank You

If you have a manufacturer with the exact same name as the stencil name in your MMPD database then it will appear under Manufacturers.
So say you have a stencil named Furman.vss and also a Manufacturer called Furman in MMPD then it will appear under Manufacturers.
