I usually don't import CAD drawings as CAD objects so I do not know if this is standard (buggy) behavior or not. I am using Visio 2010 and once I import the CAD drawing I cannot crop it. The crop command is there, but when I drag in from the edges of the drawing it just doesn't do anything. I have right clicked on the CAD object and made sure the size and position is not locked. Any suggestions?

I also cannot insert wmf files. Visio always gives me an error. Other image formats such jpg work fine.

Have you checked if Visio has done anything to the drawing in Layer properties? (View -> Layer Properties). There you can snap, glue and lock every layer in a drawing.
