Default SI4 - Round tripping CAD files in Visio 2003

I have spent way too much time on this but I have come up with a solid process for getting CAD files in and out of Visio. Please download the white paper for the full details.

Now that's a lot of work

If you don't need the CAD drawing to be to scale in Visio it's much easier to just export the CAD drawing as a .wmf then insert it into Visio. Takes about 2 minutes. I usually insert it as a background drawing similar to an xref in CAD so I can use it in multiple pages and if it needs to change I just change one drawing.

That sounds good Jess.

Can you tell me how you do that? Are you limited to one postion for all the pages or can it be placed in different spots on the page?

Why does it loose its scale? Is that if the scale is 1cm equals 1 meter and not a scale ruler/marking?

Thanks.

Adam,
I have a question regarding this process. I have 2 cad files with several drawings of seperate floors in the model space. I tried to use this but it puts everything in to small of a space to work with. Should each of the cad files be of just 1 floor or am I not doing something correctly.

Default Roundtripping

If we dont don't have real AutoCAD, just really uselessCAD that will not open the DWG file the designer provided us, then I'm kind of up a creek without a boat - correct?

Well you need something to open the file and convert it if Visio wont open it. AutoCAD Lite is a good option because it is made for 'RealDWG" and should open all DWG files, Also the instructions I set up at the top of the post are designed for AutoCAD products.

If you want send me the file and convert for you.

Default Other versions

We're hoping to be able to get this to work for us.
We will be using autoCAD Lt 2009 with Visio 2007 in SI5.2
Are there any known issues/variations that I should know about.
