It would be helpful if the PDM indicated items that were in a drawing regardless of the drawing being open or not.
Currently, the PDM will indicate an icon next to an item when a drawing is open and that item exists in the drawing. I would propose that rather than scanning drawings for the existence of items (which seems like the current method of auditing drawings), SI5 should implement a data structure that manages the inclusion of items in a drawing. When an item is added to or deleted from a drawing OR a drawing is deleted, the data structure is updated.
The PDM (regardless of being open in autoCad/Visio/Text) will have a field available indicating at least 3 states:
1 - no icon: the item is not included in any drawings
2 - full icon: the item is included in the current drawing
3 - faded icon: the item is included in some drawing but not the current
additionally, the icon can have a number indicating how many drawings the item is in (think: iPhone email app with unread message indicator). Scanning over the icon will show a list of the drawings that the item is included in allowing the user to open the drawing.
can we get that nailed out by thursday :P

This is a HUGE issues for me and I wager for all serious D-Tools users and you have totally nailed it. I don't want to guess how many hours I have spent scanning drawings because of this issue. If this feature is added EVERY one of your suggestions should be part of it as they are all spot on. GREAT post!!!

This is a great idea and would save countless designers a lot of time in design review. What would really make this feature pop would be the ability to jump to a page from the PDM item as described in #3 - sort of like an advancement to the current feature giving you the ability to find an item on the current drawing page from the pdm.
