Default x64 OS Support

While I personally have not attempted installation of version 4 on a 64bit operating system I do recall reading posts of it able to be installed and used in 32bit mode.

I've decided to use a XP64 for my new workstation and have found the only piece of software that will not work in any way shape or form is System Integrator 5.

Are there any plans support XP64 or Vista64 in the near future? Why is it not capable of running in 32bit mode on the OS?

Thought I would bring back this old thread. We have several future users here, but because the run 64 bit they are unable to install dtools...
Is there plans for a 64 bits version of SI5?

I agree, we had to purchase a separate server to run D-Tools server components, what a waste. Added an additional $800 to the cost of deployment and complicates backup strategies.

Default 64-bit compatibility in the works

Yes. We are currently investigating what it will take to make SI5.5 operate on 64-bit machines. I don't have any specific dates for you yet, but initial testing is going well.

What happens, today, if you run 5.5 client on a Vista or XP 64 bit machine? Won't it just run the emulator and run it in 32 bit mode? We've got a couple of AutoCAD guru's here that are getting new workstations next month (April) and insisting on 64 bit with 8gb of RAM! Ideas??? What will happen? Will it work mostly? Will it not work at all?

The biggest problem is that it won't install. The version of SQL Server Express that we ship will only install and run on a 32-bit machine. Once you get past that, initial tests are that it seems to run properly. However we still don't know if it will interface properly with 64-bit Visio, Quickbooks, and AutoCAD. There could be any error imaginable, including loss of data. Or it could work. These are the things we need to test and confirm before we can confidently say we're 64-bit compatible.

We will be testing again just as soon as we have the 5.5 update issues resolved, so there should be additional information available within the next month. This has a very high priority and will certainly be addressed.

SQL Server Express is only installed on the server (if you don't have a full copy of SQL) - correct? So we shouldn't see any problems installing the client on a 64 bit (except with the integration with those other apps as you suggested)? Thanks Randy!

We do install SQL Server Compact Edition on the desktop. Please do not attempt this - if it causes any problems with your server data (due to who knows what), we will be unable to support you.

Instead, if you are interested, send me an email to beta@d-tools.com requesting to help us test 64-bit compatibility. That way we can better track who is doing this and find problems together.

Shawn,

I received your email, but get a "message undeliverable" error when I try to respond. In any case I'll contact you when we have something to test, which should be in a couple of weeks.

Thank you for your help.

Randy

Randy - what about server? The 11 mb that is installed at the server - can that be installed on a 64 bit server do you know? We're about to put our new SQL server in - and it's a dual core 64 bit server... will this be a problem? I assume it'll run that 11mb in the 32 bit emulator - but I want to check before we proceed! Thanks!
