Default Card Cage and Custom Product

It would be nice if you could customize a product. Many manufactures alow you to build a custom configuration. Example: Biamp Audia Flex. The Flex starts with a Flex Frame and has 12 slots for cards. It can be configured with anything from 24 inputs to 24 outputs. It can have a telephone interface card or echo canceling inputs. The posibilities are numerious. It would require many products in database. Extron has developed a similar product. One option I looked at was to use the accessories option. However, the options would not be part of the block drawing. Other packages alow you to turn off inputs and outputs on the blocks in the drawing.

Your Thoughts?

I agree, we should definitely take this into consideration when we begin defining the new data model.

I'm curious why you wouldn't just use the cards in the schematic? You don't have to put every item on the drawing so you can just show with regular Visio drawing tools that those cards are inside a card frame.

For instance a Crestron Pro2. Every time we install one, we have cards to go with it. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we have a card as an accessory, and when we drop the product to the page we bring the card over too. I just snap the shapes together and go with it.

I am kind of having mixed feelings right now about being able to "turn off" certain i/os. I see the benefit of having an audio distro page and wanting to turn off the video or unused i/os to get them out of the way and make your stencils smaller. But would the extra effort of managing another data entry field be worth the trouble? Not to mention the possibility of compromising a design when you look at your shape to discover that your out of component inputs. JMO

The idea of snaping the cards in is interesting. On the Biamp Flex it could be 12 cards. It would seem to get a bit messy. As to turning on and off I.O.'s, the way I have seen it done is you decide which ones are on or off when you place it in a drawing. It prompts you to choose.
