Default Package as accessory

Is there any way to add a package as an accessory to a product? We usually use Unicol mounts for projectors and screens, and a lot of those mounts are assemblys, so a projector mount can be 4 or 5 separate items. Ceiling mount, pole of different lengths, projector mount and adapter plate. Same with ceiling mounts for screens.

Can this be done or should I go to the "suggestions and feature requests" section?

There is no way to do this now - only products can be added as accessories.
This has been logged as a feature request.

my suggestion is to ditch packages all together.
allow multiple depths of accessories to items with the ability to price override the accessory to get the same functionality.

thoughts?

I think packages are an easy way to make sure that everything will be included. In our case, we might end upo with 30 sales people using Dtools for proposals. In such case we need to make things as easy and quick as possible.

One more thing about packages: If one of the products in the package is marked as Discontinued, what happens to the package?

I agree that packages are very useful - especially for sales people. I have dealers that we have created 5-10 different Home Theater packages that they sell from. It makes the sale alot easier since they have pre-engineered packages that have all necessary items already included.

Christian - If a product is listed as Discontinued, but it is included in a package the product will still be included in the package. Remember, by making an item Discontinued it is not removing it from your database, it is just removing it from the default product list.

My thinking is that a package is no different than an item with accessories other than you are able to override the price of a package.

If you created an item with your company name as the manufacturer (call it "package X" and the category as "packages"), then added all the items in the package as accessories, none of the parts would be left out.

another scenario is when you actually have a manufacturer package, like a Sennheiser antenna kit that comes with a bunch of pre-fab cables. you can still create the package and actually organize it with Sennheiser as the manufacturer. So you achieve the ability to organize your packages rather than have an ever increasing list of packages growing at the bottom of your product list.

If the ability to nest multiple levels of accessories is implemented, then adding packages as accessories is implemented because they are just another item. Multiple levels of accessories would be great anyway because its not good adding accessories that have labor items as accessories and losing the labor allocation.

I realize this is a design issue, and more of a feature request that will probably never gain support. But it seems like a better data model to me: simpler.

It would be nice to be able to have a "manufacturer" listing or something similar on the packages so that they could be sorted beter.

Right. Just what I was afraid of. It would be nice if future versions of D-tools could warn me when I list a product as discontinued and it is included in a package so I won't have salespeople who sells projectors that are no longer available
