That's funny, I have been wondering the same thing. I have worked proposals both ways, with a "pre-wire" line item and using wire as an accessory. I am in the process of revamping the database. I would be interested in seeing your "test" quote as well, if you don't mind. I wasn't fond of the pre-wire line item, because it appeared that parts were missed. But now that I have taken over the management of the database, it was because they weren't built correctly. So I am torn between being able to drag a speaker for dist.audio and it automatically prompt me for the speaker wire and bracket.

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one struggling with these issues!

Cool Examples

Check out a couple of samples I tossed together. The Smith Residence is utilizing wire by foot, which I like because it allows much better interaction with quickbooks via Q-Link and inventory, and another, Clark Residence, using preset wire lengths of 30, 60 & 100 ft lengths. Hope this help you see what I am trying to accomplish.
