Default LANSync and VPNs?

Can LANSync work across a VPN? I work from home 2 days/week with a VPN tunnel to the office. Currently I can "see" the LANSync share just fine but D-Tools cannot sync to it. I am running v4.6.

Yes, it can work across VPN. If using BizMgr it may take a bit to load the Client/Job Table at start-up.
Make sure the Lansync "ini" file is properly configured. Do you get an error? What happens when you attempt to LanSync?

Default ini points to IP

Yea we had to change our ini file to point to the IP of the server and also had to make sure my home network IP range was different. My office and home both used 192.168.1.xxx and so I changed my home to 192.168.2.xxx and it works fine. Like Reed said though... if you are using Biz Manager the project lookup will be slow.

Thanks guys. I had been getting "server not found" errors. I just looked at the .ini file and saw that for the DataSource line it was pointing to the computer name rather than the IP address (which is static) for the server which could be the problem. Works either way on the office network, but may require the IP address across the VPN. I will try it again tonight.

So if I VPN to my PC here at work which is my only way to get to the server, my 'Local Projects' are still going to be here at the the office and not on my PC at home. Is this correct? The reason I am ask is because when I log on to my PC, I actually log onto a profile on the Server. I point my "local projects folder" to 'my documents' so it will be considered local and still be backed up with the server on a daily basis, just in case I don't check-in the project.

Default That did it!

Changing the .ini file to show IP addresses did the trick. I am not using Biz Manager, so no problems there. Jordan - sorry, but I don't know the answer to your question.

When you put a file in "My Documents" is it stored locally or is it stored on your server? It sounds like you have remapped "My Docs" to point to a server sharepoint. If that is true then the answer to your question is yes. The Docs will be moved via VPN to your server when you exit the project. Most people have great download at home, but slow upload. Your method will really slow down the Save Local process since it requires the VPN connection.

If you VPN to your office and you are running D-Tools on a machine that is physically in the office then...Yes. Your local projects will be on the work machine still.

If D-Tools is installed on your machine at home and you open it there then the local projects will be on your machine at home. Make sense?

It does, but when I VPN I am logging on to my account on the server. That account is pointing my local projects folder, which is 'my docs', which is yes, a server provided file, so that means that it will extract the project from the targeted server location, it is re-locating it to, actually, another folder on the server, d-tools just thinks its local because I am logged onto that account on the server. Confusing?

Jordan, Are you using BizMgr? If so, the "Local" files are typically stored at C:\D-Tools Projects when they are "Local".
