Default Procedure for Moving Server

We are in the process of updating our server hardware in the office.

I recently backed up the product database and the project database, uninstalled Lansync from the original server, installed it on the new server, then tried to restore the databases from the backups.

When doing that, the D-Tools software throws an exception and crashes. It reports that the backup is from a different database and fails.

How do I move the data over?

James,

We have a document to assit you with this, unfortunately I am away from the office (Sunday) and don't have a link to it with me. If you email support on Tuesday they will send you the document. I know we have one online, but it may not be the latest revision, and I'd hate to link to the wrong one. If I find it, I will post it here. Thanks!

Stuck working on Sunday too huh!

Thanks for the reply.

I've been able to load our product database back up to the new server, but the project links are all broken.

If you can think of a solution, let me know, otherwise I will wait til Tuesday.

James,

here is the .doc that I mentioned. Take a look at it and see if you did it this way. Thanks!

Jose:

I've tried this a couple times now. I can't log into the admin console afterwards and clients can't access the databases either (Same results both times.)

This has been down for a week now, I need this working on Monday for meetings we have this week.

Help!

Done

I got the licence issue sorted out then I had to do the following;

Reinstalled Lansync server with the "overwrite database" option

Moved all previously checked out (including all archived projects) to a new folder on my local machine

Opened up D-tools on the local machine

Copied product database and project defaults up to server

Imported each and every project from the "moved" local folder, then checked them into the server one at a time

Went to each workstation where D-Tools is installed and emptied the SI5 projects folder before reconnecting

A very tedious process, but it worked! If I'd had a few hundred projects to deal with, this would have been unmanageable. I hope you guys get this procedure sorted out. I could not get it to work no matter how many times I tried.

I to followed the instructions and if it were not for your post I would still be scratching my head. What project defaults do I need to copy to the new server?

The restore database feature in LanSync does not seem to work and if you depend on it for recovery I would take other measures.

D-Tools please streamline this process or update the document on moving the server. Makes me wonder if I am missing any information such as labor rates, company logos, etc. I guess I will find out when I create my next project.

Here is how I got all of my projects to repopulate.

Stop the service "DTools LANSync v5 Server".

The document that explains how to move the server states not to copy the "clientconfiguration.xml or DToolsCache.xml" files, however I copied them over and edited all references from the previous server name to the new server name.

Also everything that was in "D-Tools SI5 Projects" folder within the "My Documents" folder was copied over to the new server and I edited "FileMgrCache.xml" like I did with the other .xml files.

Restart the service "DTools LANSync v5 Server".

The files will then take a couple minutes to resync (this may take longer for your company depending on how many projects are in the folders).

After logging into SI5 I had to highlight each project and have it "Get latest version of all files for this project".

Seems to be working.
