Default LANSync w/HOSTS file

Hello All -
New user here.

Topology:
- VERY small LAN (4 hosts + networked copier).
- LANSync and SQL Express installed on a PC separate from app (Navigator,
Text, Quicklinks) clients.
- Lazy/Otherwise Burdened/Multi-hatted/Minimally-PC-Skilled Admin (me).

Issue:
- My 1st SI5/DTools Navigator client was 'unable to locate LANSync Server'. Server name: DTSI5.

Solution Attempt #1:
- I tried using the I.P. address of the LANSync server instead of the name, as I have no local DNS configured (I know, I know...). RESULT: No love; this kinda surprised me.

Solution Attempt #2:
- I added the address and name of the LANSync server to the HOSTS file on this client. RESULT: Voila...and Bob's yer Uncle! Much joy!
CAVEAT: CREATE A COPY of the HOSTS file. Save the original with an extension (i used .original). EDIT ONLY the COPY of the HOSTS file and SAVE IT WITHOUT an EXTENSION (just like the original). Editing and saving w/o extension is most easily done from a system prompt.

Epilogue: I post this info for the following purposes

a) to learn if there are any potential ramifications to this low-tech workaround
b) to share an easy, low-tech, almost-guiltless solution

Cheers!

Sorry, I don't know the ramifications of your workaround. Did you try following the suggestions in this doc first? Troubleshooting LANSync Errors/Messages

Ya, I did look at those troubleshooting suggestions.
It was when everything in that doc either made no difference or didn't apply that I struck upon the 'no DNS, use HOSTS file' approach.

Since we don't have a Windows domain, most of the file security suggestions didn't apply.

I actually think that this is a 'Windows Master Browser/Browser Wars' LAN Manager/NetBIOS issue.

It continues to work, although it's a little pokey-slow.
I'll have to deal with that speed issue at some point.

Thanks
