Default Lansync / VPN and SI5

I am guessing the other thread about Lansync /VPN was for SI4.6. I am having problems with SI5. This is what I have.

SI5: ( one license )
Lansync: ( one license )
Server: Window XP Pro with Lansync and SI5
Laptop: Windows Vista with SI5
Router: Linksys BEFSX41 Router
Charter for Internet

The problem I am having is that I cannot connect to Lansysc through VPN with my laptop over the internet. I can log into my server ( it shows that I am connected to my server through the VPN ). I have open ever port I can think of on my router, 445, 1433, 1434, 9000 for D-tools, 1723, 50, 51, 500, still does not work, gives me a message saying “Unable to locate your Lansync server, you must be connected to your Lansync server in order to log into SI5. I tried to turn on and off windows firewall, made sure the expectations in Windows Firewall are set correctly, I just do not know what else to do. Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Eddie

I had a similar problem with not locating the server (Not over VPN though)on my Vista computer. I had to install a new Norton anti-virus and solved the problem. There seemed to be some security issue beween Norton and Vista. I couldn't tell you why and it stumped d-tools too but it worked.

I do not think this is the problem, I loaded D-tools on another PC from a remote location and it still did not work.

Thank you for the reply

The issue may be in your VPN... what software did you use to create it?

Are you able to access network folders when logged into the VPN?

Firstly, nobody should use Norton, it's a horrible program. It WILL cause trouble, period. It slows your machine down, it doesn't catch as many viruses as other options do, and it puts its fingers EVERYWHERE. Why would an AntiVirus program be blocking network traffic? (Yet NAV does... not NIS, NAV).

Anyway, on to the real problem at hand.

First: What is actually "hosting" the VPN? You are running Windows XP, which does not "host" a VPN. Is the router hosting it? Do you have a router at both ends? What are you actually connecting to with the VPN?

Second: SIFanatic asks a great question. Pinging the server is one thing, can you access network shares over the VPN? If not, LANSync will never work, it requires network shares.

Also, to add to this... if you are using a VPN, the target machine (when local) is linked to a machine NAME...

A vpn will only recognize IP addresses (it has no name server to truly refer to).

So you'll need to change that .ini file to a static IP address where the server resides.

But first, we have to make sure your VPN can access shared folders

I am not geek when it comes to VPN, so forgive me for my stupidity.

I am able from a remote PC make a “new connection” by using the wizard from MS Windows for VPN connections. I then connect using the new connection shortcut from the desktop and I am able to connect to server. On the remote PC I go to “All Programs” then “Search” type in the IP address of the server then I see all the share folders.

A name not IP address is enter for the name of the server.

I have XP Pro on the server ( Peer to Peer )

I hope this helps, if need more information let me know.

Thanks

Give the server a dedicated IP address (let me know if you need more instructions) and then direct the SI5 installation to the IP ADDRESS rather than the hostname of the server.

Let me know if this doesn't make sense, and I'll ellaborate .
