Lightbulb Customizing the Visio Templates

Customizing the Visio Templates

D-Tools System Integrator 4 provides a variety of Master Templates. These Templates open into a new drawing file with all the correct Stencils and Pages. You can customize any of these templates to meet your specific needs. You should always make a copy of the D-Tools Master Template so that you always have a backup. You will get several windows that pop up during the process telling you to 'Please open from D-Tools Navigator.exe.' Just click 'OK' and keep rolling.

Steps
  1. Navigate to the D-Tools SI 4 application folder. C:\Program Files\D-Tools\SI 4
  2. Select any of the D-Tools Template files and create a copy of the one you want to modify.
  3. Rename the copy you just made. Example: “Copy of D-Tools SI 4 24 x 36 Template.vst” to “My SI 4 24 x 36 Template.vst
  4. Open Microsoft Visio 2003.
  5. From the main menu [File], [Open].
  6. Select any of the Template you renamed and on the [Open] button to the right of 'File Name:' select the down arrow and choose [Original]. This will open the file in original mode so you are able to do modifications.
  7. Now you are ready to modify the new template the way you want.
  8. When you’re finished making changes, click [Save] and close Visio.

The next time you open a new project, you will see your new modified template as one of the choices along with the original D-Tools tempates when prompted to select a template. Select your new one and have at it.

I had the same problem... I duplicated & renamed the visio template before opening it... then I made changes and saved the already named new file.

Graham.. thanks for the tip!

Hi Kieth. Sorry for the delayed response. Kevin is correct. I'll modify the steps in my original post, which allows you to create a custom template without using [Save As].

The Save As has been turned off as it was causing duplicate projects to be created.
To reactivate temporarily:

From a Visio project
Tools/Customize/Menu then hit the reset button.

This will allow you to save as until you close the project. once you open another project the settings should go back to default. If not close D-tools completely and re open.

Make sure that your Application Data folder is not hidden. In Windows Explorer click on Tools > Folder Options > View tab > Hidden Files and Folders and make sure that "Show Hidden Files and Folders" is selected, you should also uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types." Now just click apply and ok and you should see it.
