Read-only files?
Hey guys, let me start by saying that I am on the client side of D-tools. The server is at home and I am at the shop. I am connected through VPN to the server. I am using version 5.5.378.0.
Problem One: When Checking in or Checking out a project, I get an error that asks me if I want to report it to D-tools. When I hit yes or no, D-tools shuts down. When I restart D-tools, the project is Checked in or Checked out - exactly what I wanted it to do but it gives me an error every time I do this.
Problem Two: When a project is checked out to me after being edited in any way by the server, I check it back out to myself and it is read-only. And yes, the username I'm using is an administrator with permissions.
I'm guessing it is a VPN issue because I troubleshot a little bit and took the client computer to the house where the server is located and I had no problems.
Any idea where I might start to look at solving this problem?

First off create a support ticket for Tech Support (from within SI5.5 click on the Help Menu and then click Support, then either Submit a Ticket or Chat) they might be able to help.
Second my guess is that it is most likely a VPN connection issue. If you are planning on using a VPN connection you need to have a pretty robust internet connection to make this work without creating issues. Note that this is referring to a robust connection on BOTH sides. Basic $14.95 high speed internet is not going to do the trick.

Thanks for the quick response, Dave.
I've talked to tech support twice about these issues and they can't explain why. They said make sure permissions are set correctly and that should fix the issue. Well, it didn't unfortunately.
I believe you're right about the VPN connection. Both sides have Cox cable high speed internet. We're using Apple routers. Internet shouldn't be an issue for us.
I'll look at it some more. Was just checking to see if anyone has had this issue.
Thanks!

We have a product/service coming out in the next few months that we have had in Beta Testing for the last 4 months that is getting excellent reviews in the Beta process.
It is a "hosted" server for D-Tools. We have allocate a server in a off-site datacenter and set it up as your D-Tools server, we then use a software VPN connection to allow you to connect to your server from anywhere that you have a internet connection. You overall connection speeds will vary depending on your internet connection. Since it is hosted in a huge datacenter the connection on the server side is the best that you can get.
If you are interested in getting more details on the service or the Beta feel free to send me an email (my contact info is below)

I would do a speed test on your internet connection first off to make sure that you are getting the connectin speed that you are paying for. Next what are your connection speeds (up and down) at both locations?

I'm not currently near the server's connection, so I can't test that side. My connection at the shop is showing 3.78 Mbps download spead and 1.88 Mbps upload speed.

I would check the server side when you get home. My guess is that could be where your problem is.
On the side of the office - prices are dropping like crazy for internet service you might want to check with your provider to see what the cost for an upgrade would be. I just upgraded my service from a 20mb service to 65mb service for $5 less per month.

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
This is the one that I find to be the most reliable. You should expect to see some differences between different tests, but not that much

I will check the server side asap and look into upgrading my internet - that's a huge difference and for less money. Weird.
Thanks for the tips!
