Corey's post here describes :"Google Data Search feature which can be used to quickly find equipment data on the web." in the 5.5 SP2 update.
can anyone elaborate on how this feature works?
does it actually extract data somehow?
is it a fancy way of saying "we'll fill in the google search field for you when you click on a button in SI"?

You will be able to view the selected product in PDM/Product Grid/Product Dialog in Google Product Search. There is no extract data functionality.
However you can drag images from web pages to the product image control and also drag text to product and client descriptions. Note: Drag and Drop has some restrictions in Windows 7 and Vista due to UAC settings.
Not sure of the use of the Google Data Search as it takes you to the Shopping TAB - I don't see how this is helpful , if it searched the WEB for the information then I would see that as beneficial.
I do like how you can copy and paste data from the web into the Product Description.
