What does selecting page type do? I have always just selected the page type such as elevation, floor plan etc. when I create a new page. But what does that selection actually do? Is it only related to dropping an item on a page? What would I want to select when I am showing different views on a page, such as a schematic and a floor plan?

Page type drives the default shape D-Tools will place on the page when pulling an item to the page from the project data matrix.

Combining plan view and schematic documentation on a single page will cause you to use the 'right-click' function to change the shape to be either a schematic shape or a plan shape as needed.

Best to do such documentation on the appropraite page type.

Once a schematic page is completed on its own page, you could save it as a JPG image, and use Insert>Picture to place the JPG of your schematic page onto a plan view page.
