Default Project Folder

So, i've been working on a few projects and wanted to reorganize my projects directory (some dTools projects, and some not associated with Dtools).

What i expected to happen:
check in all my work, delete all the local files.
edit projects folder in project setup.
check out projects into new folder

What happened:
I checked in all my work, and deleted all the local files.
I went to Project Setup to edit my projects folder.
I browsed to my new project directory and clicked save.
Dtools hated this and died, several times over, i had to click through about a half dozen cycles of "do you want to save your changes" and "send error reports" before the application actually died.

When i reopened, Navigator crashes before starting saying it can't find the project directories for projects i don't have checked out anyway.

I manually create the project directories.

I finally get navigator to open and there are two copies of each project in Navigator.

I check out a project (fortunately just a testing project). I delete the duplicate which is not checked out. dTools deletes the server copy and the local copy and all is lost.

I panic.

I check out my projects and store all files somewhere that dTools hopefully cannot touch.

the only way to get back to normal was delete everything on the server and local dTools folder, then import my copies.

did i commit a cardinal sin by trying to change my projects folder?
Im scared to touch anything now....

I think it is fair to say that some very important parts of the software are still held together with duct tape and bailing wire. Leave well enough alone...

Well not duct tape, but an xml file.

Look in your projects folder for this 'FileMgrCache.xml'

Open that bad boy up and you can see how everything project's wise is tracked.

Going outside D-Tools navigator to move files does not update this xml file so it get 'vewy confoos-ed'

I had this happen with an hardware change once and I watch in amazement as my IT Pro (who does not work with D-Tools) looked at the content in the XML document and made the changes that we made by manually moving files and righted the project directory - amazing!

Cardinal sin, probably not, but now you know its a big jackpot to move things outside SI5's watchful eye.

Good job righting your ship! Glad we have the delete project feature - before that, what you did was not possible.

Default improvements coming

Fundamental improvements to file management are on the way in 5.5. FileMgrCache.xml will soon be a thing of the past.

If anyone is interested in helping, we are looking for a handful of DToolsProjects50 and DToolsUsers50 databases from customers (from your SQL server) to run it through its paces internally before it gets to a beta group.

I will post instructions on how to do this in a couple of days - the basic instructions are to backup the databases, compress the backups to a zip file, and email to beta@d-tools.com.

Until 5.5 comes out, fryeguy is right - it's best not to mess with this.

mine are on the way...
and you did in fact mean DToolsProjects50 and DToolsUsers50 right?
Because the Users50 does not backup from inside LanSync unless it is not obvious to the user...

Default SQL Management Express needed

Thanks Kevin - I received your projects database.

Regarding the users database, it is actually easiest to do this using SQL Management Express (or similar), which is why I need to write up more detailed instructions. SQL Management Express is a great free tool for managing and backing up your SQL server database.
