Default Visio Won't Display Pictures

Maybe I'm missing something, but I am trying Visio for the first time with SI 5.1 today and can not get the pictures of the products to display.

I remember in SI4.6 that in "Edit" for the product, you have to go to visualization and click "Visio" and "CAD" boxes to allow the actual picture image to display.

I can not find this feature in 5.1. So all I get is a box with the abbreviation of the category the product is tied to.

Let me elaborate: there are some occasions (especially with big jobs), I like to open Visio, drag and drop each major, non-wire, part over to a block, and create a visualization of the job at hand - the products the client is going to buy. We have had success that especially on large jobs, this visualization does work. They can see, oh boy, I got lots of these, and not enough of those... they can engineer their job at the table, which normally means I can seal the job right then and there.

Visio seems to work as designed... I can drag and drop, and place items on a view, and it attempts to place the wires according to ins and outs. But I just can't seem to get the physical picture to show up.

There are a couple of ways to do this --

First make sure your product is in the MasterTable database. You can only set specific visualizations for products that exist in your MasterTable database. If you are not sure if your product is in the MasterTable then in the PDM right click the product and click "Update Data to MasterTable" (this will add product to MasterTable if it does not exist in MasterTable).

1. Now right click Product and go to D-Tools | Edit and select the Visualizations tab and you can select Visualizations for different views (Line, Elevation and Plan). The next time you drag this product to this view it will use the visualization you selected.

2. You can also add a JPG Image to a product and then drag to Line view in Visio - this will show the jpg image for the product within a shape. To add an image to a product click "Add" in the Image frame in the Edit Product form. Images are shown using the "Line Image" master shape.

Aaaaaaah... thought I might be missing something. It's the "Line View" I need to be using to do this. I thought it was "Plan View" I used in 4.6.

All other views, no matter what I did only showed "Spk" or "Ctl".

Line View definitly shows the JPEG picture and allows me to do what I want. Thanks!

P.S. - Could you please walk me through editing the Visio page template?

I did it once before with SI4.6, but obviously once its setup, I never touched it again. It's been a long time since I did it and I have forgotten. I would like to add our logo, make a few changes to the information and such.

I remember enabeling a list from "View" and right clicking the template or something, and going into a deeper layer to do the actual edit, but it's foggy. Can't seem to find what I remember in order to do this.

Thanks again!

Glad that helped.

To edit the Visio templates navigate to the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\D-Tools\SI5\Templates" folder. The Visio templates are stored here and end with vst (*.vst).

Right click any vst file and click Open to open the template (do not click New - New creates a new drawing based on the template).

You will see a prompt propting for Client and Project Name since this template is not connected to any D-Tools dtl file at this point. Simply click Cancel here. Make any changes to template and click Save.

Check this post on how to change logo
Visio d-tools image

Before trying backup the templates to a different folder to be sure nothing goes wrong.

That's easy - in 4.6 I was instructed (maybe my instructor was wrong) to open Vision through D-Tools, then you had to find the stencile view, open the stencil, right click it and do something, then edit.

Then when you were done, you hade to post it or something to make it active.

What a hassel just to make a few minor tweaks.

The way you described is much easier and works like a champ. Thanks again!
