There seem to be a few issues with product images:

Imported product JPEGs that are smaller than 230 x 230 pixels are resampled exactly 4 pixels smaller giving them a distict folded or torn edge. For instance a JPEG size 200 x 200 will be imported and recompressed as a 196 x 196 image.

Any imported product JPEG will be recompressed as well as resized, even if it meets the max size requirements. Why not simply copy the image if it meets the size/format requirements rather than make an already compressed image look worse by recompressing it?

Reports with images have issues with product images that have no margin or border area around the image no matter the size of the image.

We are still having problems that some icons don't even show up in the reports at all... even when we delete them / re-enter them etc...

Same issue here. Haven't figured out how to consistently reproduce the problem, but it sounds like I'm having the same issue you are.
