Default Owner Furnished Equipment

We have been undertaking quite a few projects that involve some preexisting equipment. Often this is equipment that I really don't want to enter as sku's in MMPD as it is equipment we will likely never use again. All I really want to do is drag in a generic component that we have set up, such as "generic television", and then enter a model for it, so it shows up in reports as the model it actually is. However D-Tools does not play nice with this and forces you to go through the entire process of creating the manufacturer and model etc., thereby polluting my database with components I do not want there. Granted I can then make them inactive, but again, too much time - I just want to use a generic sku and throw a model number on it.

So my question is, has anyone else come up with a simple way to enter owner furnished equipment on the fly? I guess the main problem here is that I want the model to show up in the model field on reports. I would just enter the model for the OFE in the notes field, but then it would not show up in reports. Or perhaps I should just use the description field?

How do you guys address this?

i would add an item (like a generic item)to the project, edit product as needed, don't save to Master table on save.

is this what you've been doing?

David -

I see three options for what you are trying to accomplish:

1. Enter each OFE product as an item in your database (I would not do that)

2. Use a generic item and change the description (not what you are looking for)

3. Add a generic item to the project. Edit that item - change the model number and description to be what you want and then when you save your changes do NOT save to the mastertable so the changes will be local to that project only (that would be my suggestion)

Thanks guys. I didn't realize I could just NOT click "save to database" and not have a sku created. I won't bother you with why I made that assumption .

David,

One more way to do this -

1. In the PDM you have an option under the "New" toolbar button called "Add New Product".
Add new product.JPG

2. Here you can add a product not in your Master database and check the "Owner Furnished Equipment" checkbox. For OFE products you are never prompted to save to master. Also OFE products can have labor but no product price.

Also FYI if you never wanted to be prompted to save to master for anything there is a new checkbox in 5.5 SP1 in D-Tools | Options | General tab called "Prompt to update MasterTable after updating product/package".

Naresh - Great post - I did not know that was a feature. I like it when I learn something new!

I do a combination of all three. I do have a manufacturer called "Owner Furnished" with generic titles. I will change the descriptions to model numbers. This way I have associated accessories for each type of product.
