If you are using Adobe Acrobat Standard or Pro (not the reader) you can open the PDF files that have been sent to you and save them in another format.

I sometimes open the PDF file and use the crop tools to strip the titleblock from the file. Then click Save As and under files of type change it to tiff. Click settings in the same dialog and adjust the resolution to something like 150 pixels/inch and save. This file should be considerably smaller and can still be imported into Visio. You may need to test different resolution settings to find something you like at a reasonable size. As long as the PDF file that was sent to you is of a known scale you can still scale it with a little work. That is a topic for another post though...
